I'm Wayne Murphy, a photographer specializing in dance, portrait, and sports photography in Kalispell, Montana. Formerly of JMK Photography, I bring a creative, personalized approach to every session, whether photographing high school seniors, dancers, athletes, or individuals looking for something beyond the ordinary portrait.

My goal is to create images that go beyond simply documenting a moment. I look for personality, movement, emotion, and the interplay of light to create photographs that feel distinctive, expressive, and authentic. Every session is an opportunity to create something personal and memorable.

DANCE PHOTOGRAPHY

My connection to dance began long before I ever picked up a camera. My mother was a professional dancer, and as a child, I spent countless hours sitting in on her classes and rehearsals. My usual spot was on the piano bench beside the accompanist, an older woman whose music provided the soundtrack to those early years.

That experience gave me an appreciation for the discipline, dedication, and artistry behind dance. I understand the years of training, the physical demands, and the commitment required to become a skilled dancer. I see dancers as both elite athletes and extraordinary artists.

Those early experiences also shaped the way I see movement—the lines, shapes, and moments of unexpected beauty that make dance so visually compelling.

Fast-forward 35 years. My daughters were dancing, their school needed a photographer, and I stepped in. That was 17 years ago, and dance photography has since become one of my greatest creative passions.

Over the years, I've developed an approach that blends editorial, fashion, and fine-art photography with bold color, dramatic lighting, and thoughtful composition. Whether capturing the energy of a powerful movement or creating an intentional studio portrait, my goal is to showcase each dancer's strength, grace, personality, and individuality.

I work with dance companies, schools, studios, brands, and independent dancers to create imagery that celebrates both the artistry of dance and the individuals behind it.
